Downtown Historic Preservation

Historic preservation preserves local history, protects irreplaceable landmarks, and promotes sustainable revitalization. It drives downtown renewal, neighborhood stability, tourism, job creation, and affordable housing.

Valdosta’s historic significance is showcased in its Historic District, established in 1981, encompassing about 150 blocks. The City’s 1980 historic preservation ordinance, now part of its Land Development Regulations, created the Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) to designate landmarks and review exterior changes. Administered by the Planning and Zoning Division, this program ensures historic sites are preserved while supporting community prosperity and sustainability. More information can be found HERE
